Hotter than Hades,
hot in the shade,
Too hot for working
with shovel or spade,
Too hot for horses,
cattle and dogs,
Too hot for pigeons,
chickens and hogs -
August has come with
its merciless heat,
Roasting the corn on
the stalk in a beat.
Fields seem to
crackle as sun hits the ground,
Hardly a place that
is cool to be found.
This is the summer
Missouri
knows best,
Putting each creature
alive to the test.
Can they survive the
withering sun?
Even the nighttime is
not very fun.
Crickets are sipping
small cups of ice tea,
Mosquitoes are
waiting for blood that is free.
Ants are in search of
a house with AC
As honeycombs melt in
the hives of a bee.
Too hot for moving,
too hot for eggs,
Too hot for tables
that stand on four legs.
Too hot to cook the
simplest meal,
Searching the paper
for a fast food deal.
But out in Sedalia,
the State Fair goes on,
In spite of the heat,
common sense nearly gone.
Animals sweating
beneath fairground tents
Why didn’t someone
put in extra vents?
But for those in
Missouri, it’s just how it goes,
Like winters so cold
that they freeze off your nose.
So just wait a while,
the heat will soon cease,
And for a moment in
Autumn, we finally get …
Peace,
Alex
