“Try to remember a
time in September…”
when you were young,
so bright and chipper,
when school was fun
and days exciting.
Try to remember the
joy of September
When learning was
your main occupation -
Watching kids go off
to school,
Eager to learn and
laugh and play,
Backpacks slung
across a shoulder,
Active minds that
greet each new day,
Classrooms filled
with new agendas,
Challenges for mind
and spirit,
Teachers guiding
agile students,
Priming each who
choose to hear it.
When does learning
cease to be
Something that we
hope to see
As daily effort,
ideas abound?
When do words morph
into sound
That somehow fails to
pique the mind,
Turning into daily
grind?
How does life become
so gray
That we have trouble
on the way?
Because we see the
steely sky
And never ask or
wonder why
We find our lives a
daily trudge,
Filled with anger,
fear and grudge.
Yet children know the
joy of day,
They see the light
and hope display
That God has sent us
to release
By singing, learning,
knowing…
Peace,
Alex
